Para la relación entre dos variables x e y suele escribirse como: y = mx + b, llamada generalmente la forma estandar, como se muestra en la anterior figura.En el siguiente diagrama, recordando la forma de representar las relaciones entre variables que hemos trabajado en sexto y séptimo grado, podemos representarla como sigue. Al lado izquierdo se representan los pasos que sirven para hallar el valor de y cuando nos dan x (método directo); al lado derecho encontramos los pasos a realizar para hallar x, cuando nos dan y (método inverso). Esta función servirá como modelo de aquellos fenómenos en los que es posible encontrar que las variables relacionadas estén elevadas al exponente 1 y que tienen una pendiente que siempre es constante; o sea, que siempre aumenta lo mismo en x en relación con lo que aumenta en y.
