Explicación

REPORTED SPEECH: Hello students of 11th grade, how are you? I hope you are very good! I´ve remembered a lot you!

I want to remember you, some grammar structures for to broach the topic of today, "Reported speech" But first, I would like to share you my video mami-cocina, mom in kitchen, which, I did it with so love for all my students. I hope you watch it with so much respect. Excuse if you observe me slightly nervous, but it´s the first time, I do a video. I´d never made one, neither in Spanish, nor in English, and you feel a little scared!. and excuse me for the nosy fly, too, it was immediately killed by my camerawoman, hahahah, what a shame! Click here for video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S6VnFcxt7c

HOW YOU REPORT IDEAS OF OTHERS:

IT´S VERY EASY! FIRST, YOU CHECK THE GRAMMAR STRUCTURE OF THE EXPRESSIONS:

IF THE EXPRESSION IS IN PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE, YOU REPORT IT, IN PAST SIMPLE TENSE.

Examples:

"Good morning students" (direct speech),.

Teacher said...(indirect or reported speech). Empiezas diciendo, ella dijo...

Lo dicho textualmente por el hablante es discurso directo, lo colocas entre comillas.

- "How are you"

- Teacher asked (us that) how were we. La expresión está en presente simple, para reportarla, cambia a pasado. That es un elemento de enlace, que en español significa que, pero no la de interrogar, si no como unión o enlace, por eso se llama conjunción o adjetivo relativo, aunque es opcional, como también el pronombre posesivo US, por eso lo coloco entre paréntesis.

IF THE EXPRESSION IS IN PROGRESSIVE TIME, YOU MUST REPORT IT IN PAST PROGRESSIVE TENSE.

-"I´m squeezing the oranges"

Teacher said she WAS ezqueezing the oranges, cambia "to be" verb. a pasado: "Estoy exprimiendo las naranjas". La profesora dijo que ella estaba exprimiendo las naranjas.

IF THE EXPRESSION IS IN PAST SIMPLE TENSE, YUO REPORT IT IN PAST PERFECT TENSE.

"I squeezed the oranges" (direct speech). Teacher said she HAD SQUEEZIED the oranges. (indirect or reported speech)

"Yo exprimí las naranjas" (lenguaje directo). La profesora dijo que había exprimido las naranjas.. (lenguaje indirecto o reportado)

Así que, para reportar ideas que son dichas en tiempo pasado simple, se cambia a pasado perfecto, al reportarse, como lo muestra el ejemplo anterior.

IF THE EXPRESSION IS IN FUTURE WITH ...GOING TO, YOU USE TO BE VERB IN PAST TENSE.

"I´m going to prepare my breakfast"

-She told she WAS going to prepare her breakfast. En este ejemplo, el "to be" cambia a pasado= WAS. Ella dijo que iba a preparar su desayuno.

IF THE EXPRESSION IS IN FUTURE WITH "WILL", YOU REPORT IT WITH THE MODAL VERB "WOULD"

"I´ll conect the sandwich maker"

She said she WOULD conect the sandwich maker. Cambia el auxiliar WILL por el verbo modal WOULD, que expresa una posibilidad-tiempo gramatical pluscuanperfecto- . Conectaré la sanduchera. Ella dijo que conectaría la sanduchera.

-Teacher said to us (me, you, him, her, them) (La profesora nos dijo), (me dijo, te dijo, le dijo a él, le dijo a ella, le dijo a ellos) she was going to prepare her beakfast. (ella iba a preparar su desayuno). Los pronombres posesivos en el paréntesis, son opcionales y si usas el verbo SAY = SAID, se le coloca TO, delante, como se muestra en el ejemplo.

IF THE EXPRESSION IS ABOUT A DUTY, "MUST", YOU REPORT IT, CHANGE IT POR HAD TO. (pasado de HAVE) to refer mandatoryness (obligatoriedad, tenía que...)

-"I must wash my hands" "yo debo lavar mis manos". She said she HAD TO wash her hands. Ella dijo que tenía que lavar sus manos.

El verbo auxiliar modal MUST cambia a HAD TO

She´s saying,... ella está diciendo... She was saying to my mother...ella estuvo diciendo a mi madre...She´s said to her students,..ella le ha dicho a sus estudiantes.... she´d said to her husband... ella le había dicho a su esposo...

Y así sucesivamente, para finalizar es importante que sepas que el habla o lenguaje directo, al ser reportado, cambia al habla o lenguaje indirecto y según el tiempo gramatical en el que se emita la expresión, así mismo, cambia su tiempo gramatical, al cambiarlo a discurso indirecto o reportado: REPORTED SPEECH.

Watch the following video, it teaches to report ideas, in an easy way.
